<lj:music>Demodemo - Say Good-bye</lj:music>

I have a funny story about “Au Revoir”. It's sort of like other farewells. I've always been fond of farewells phrases, the English “farewell” especially. It's very old fashioned-sounding when you think about them. Fare thee well. It sounds like the kind of thing knights probably said to each other before parting ways. It's saying “I hope your life is gonna be all right” which is sort of the kind of thing I repeatedly find myself wanting to tell people. The sad thing about Farewell is the finality of it; you wish them a good life, a life that you presumably won't be playing a part in. Other languages have more uplifting goodbyes, which seem to fall into one of two categories, the “see again” variety and the “with god” variety.

“Adios” is Spanish for goodbye. A and dios mean “Go with God”, more or less. It's the equivalent of the English Goobye, which means “God be with you”. I've always preferred “Godspeed”, it sounds cooler and adventurous and almost space-aged. Lots of languages have some sort of “God be with you” equivalent, such as Adieu in French, and the rare Addio in Italian.

“Auf Wiedersehen” is a sort of boring one. German has other farewell phrases but this one literally translates to “Until seeing again”, which sounds awkward in English, or “'Til next time!” Arrivederci is much the same, but more fun to say. It simply means “See you”. Au Revoir means the same thing. Revoir is the verb “to see again”, stemming from the root word “voir” or “to see”. “Au Revoir” is simply “Until seeing again!” just like so many of its European counterparts. When I was a kid, I was told it came from “Rêve” which in this case would mean “a vision” (as in a sight, a seeing), but more often it means “a dream”. This isn't true, as I explained. Somehow that garbled etymology came down to me in elementary grade and it stuck with me, the kind of harmless misunderstanding which rarely, if ever has consequences.

Because of this mistranslation I've always really had a soft spot for the farewell “Au Revoir”. It makes me think that instead of “See you around” it means “See you in your dreams” but without the inherent cheesiness that saying has in English. To me it was always a beautiful way of saying “Let us think of each other, and remember me, keep me in mind. Dream of me.”

So what's funny about that story? Well, after Emily told me “Au Revoir,” I didn't plan on “seeing again” as Au Revoir truly means. However, I did dream of her.

I just realized that I'm actually writing a long work of fiction. The absurdity just hit me while I was typing. Normally I type one line and press enter, or I write in a scholarly tone for essays and stuff (speaking of which I should be doing school work!!!! OMG) But here I am, actually writing this thing. It's 20 pages so far, that's gross. I probably won't let anybody read it, but here's a few lines.

actually i changed my mind, nobody is allowed to read any of it. nobody is to read any of it aloud

What's not condusive to writing 1667 words a day?

Waking up at 6:40, going to school, then going to the dentist and at 11:00 getting knocked out with sedation for an hour while my wisdom teeth are removed, then waking up again, stumbling to the car, falling asleep, waking up, walking into the house, falling asleep on the couch for another 5 hours, watching The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, vomiting a lot of blood, and then falling asleep again for 13 more hours. That's a 36 hour fast! Although since it wasn't intentional I guess it's just Real Life.

on the plus side I had insane dreams

<lj:music>Andrew Bird - A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left</lj:music>

I just got a last.fm account... On the eve of November, maybe it'll give me something to do while I attempt to madly write a novel. My NaNoWriMo attempt from 2004, "Space Pirate Chronicles" topped out at about 5000 words, 10x too short to qualify, but frankly I hated writing that thing by the end.

So anyway, the problem with last.fm and "scrobbling" in general is that there's no way to 'scrobble' analog music like cassettes, or more importantly... vinyl. I thought about just playing the album on my computer with the volume off at the same time as playing it on my turn table, but that idea is especially stupid. Also, the only digital music I really listen to is on my iPod, which can technically be scrobbled, but I have yet to get it to work. But it won't be long before you can BASK in the GLOW of my musical tastes.

Did everyone have a happy halloween? I know I did, because I only had to answer the door once. Bless the weather, and bless my long, arduous driveway.

I live in Manitoba. Today, in the mail I recieved a package from Essendine, England. Inside was a 7" Record of a band from Winkler, Manitoba (and Winnipeg).
